Rougemount is the first Pickering neighbourhood past the Toronto line, with the Rouge River on the west, Petticoat Creek on the east, the CN tracks up north and the 401 at the bottom. Altona Road is the main road through, and the shops on Kingston Road line the south edge. The first houses went up around Rougemount Drive between 1900 and 1940, subdivisions came in west of Altona Road in the 1970s, and apartments and townhouses were added on the north side of Kingston Road in the 1990s. Most homes are detached on large lots, and some back onto the Little Rouge valley.
