Landscaping in Frenchman's Bay
Landscaping in Frenchman's Bay, Pickering
Frenchman's Bay is the harbour on Pickering's waterfront. It was landlocked until a channel was dug through the sandbar in 1843, and the north end of the bay is still marsh. It isn't one of the City's official neighbourhood names. The homes on the west side of the bay are in West Shore, which runs from Petticoat Creek east to the bay, between the 401 and the lake; the east side is Bay Ridges. West Shore Boulevard runs from Bayly Street down to the water, and Oklahoma Drive crosses it east to west. The first houses went up between 1900 and 1940 and most of the subdivisions came in the 1960s: detached homes, semis and townhouses. We cover the whole west shore for lawn care, cleanups, interlocking and snow clearing.
About Frenchman's Bay
The west side of Frenchman's Bay is a settled lakeside area of detached houses, semis and townhouses, with parks and natural areas along Petticoat Creek and the bay and a lakeshore path along the water. A few streets date from the early 1900s and most from the 1960s, so yards are established. Owners here mostly want them kept up rather than rebuilt: a good lawn, clean beds and walkways that stay level.

What we see in Frenchman's Bay yards
Frenchman's Bay is a coastal wetland the conservation authority lists as environmentally significant, and the park on its west shore is also designated environmentally sensitive. On lots near the water, skip fertilizer when rain is in the forecast, keep clippings and leaves out of the street where the storm drains carry them toward the lake, and choose salt-tolerant plants for beds that take the wind off the water.

Frenchman's Bay through the year
Rake the winter sand and salt off the lawn edge along the street and overseed that strip once the soil warms.
Water new plantings deeply in the morning; wind off the lake dries beds out faster than you'd expect.
Clear leaves off lawns and out of beds before they mat down, and keep them out of the storm drains.
Use a low-salt de-icer on walkways near the bay and the conservation lands.
