Landscaping in Willowdale, North York

Willowdale is the part of North York along Yonge Street between Bathurst Street and Bayview Avenue, running north to the Finch Avenue hydro corridor. It grew out of three old postal villages, Newtonbrook, Willowdale and Lansing, and four subway stations serve it: Finch, North York Centre, Sheppard-Yonge and Bayview. Yonge itself is lined with towers now. Off the main road, the oldest houses are modest one- and two-storey homes from before and just after the war, and since the 1990s many of those lots have been rebuilt with much larger two-storey houses. We cut lawns, trim hedges and clean up beds on those streets, and build interlocking driveways and walkways when a yard needs one.

About Willowdale

Willowdale mixes condo towers along Yonge Street with residential streets where modest postwar houses sit beside large rebuilt homes. The replacement houses were built on lots first occupied by much smaller ones, so front and side yards are often tighter than the street's age suggests. Landscaping here is usually about making a smaller yard look finished: a good lawn, tidy hedges and a solid driveway and walk.

When a small postwar house comes down and a much bigger one goes up on the same lot, what's left of the yard is often narrow side strips, a wider driveway and soil packed hard by the build. Loosen and top up that soil before laying sod, and point the downspouts from the bigger roof away from the side yards, or those strips stay wet all spring.
