Dunbarton is one of the oldest parts of Pickering. William Dunbar started the village on Kingston Road west of Dixie Road around 1840, and the first houses on Fairport Road, Bonita Avenue and Appleview Road went up between 1900 and 1940. The north end filled in with subdivisions in the 1980s. Most homes are detached on large lots, with Dunbarton Creek running through and the Pine Creek valley past Finch Avenue.
