Scarborough and North York are both part of the City of Toronto, so the City's rules apply to every yard we work there. Here's what actually matters.
Access is the biggest variable in the quote.Mature canopy — silver maple, Norway maple, big oaks — is common on older streets in both districts, and on a narrow side yard we can't always get equipment to the back. Some jobs run through a side gate by wheelbarrow. We quote labour with that in mind — longer hand-haul means longer time on site, no point hiding it.
Toronto's tree protection bylaw matters more than people realize.Any tree with a trunk over 30 cm diameter at breast height triggers Bylaw 813-2024 — you need a permit to remove it, and you can't excavate, regrade, or pour hardscape inside its critical root zone (typically 10× the trunk diameter) without a tree-protection plan. We check this on every site visit before quoting interlocking, regrading, or major plant relocations. The fine is $500 per centimetre of trunk diameter, so it's not a corner anyone should cut.
Soil changes a lot between the two districts.Most of Scarborough — Woburn, Agincourt, Centennial, Malvern — sits on heavy clay that holds water and compacts, while lots near the Bluffs in Guildwood, Birch Cliff and Cliffside run sandier, drain fast and lose nutrients quicker. Much of North York sits on deeper loam over clay subsoil, with the exception of ravine-edge lots backing onto the Don Valley in parts of Graydon Hall and Don Mills, where subsoil and drainage vary lot to lot. We probe the soil before pricing major work in either.
